Vietnam is the best-value destination in Southeast Asia — but “cheap” and “good value” are not the same thing. Here is the honest 14-day route for two people, priced to the dong, with the trade-offs that separate a backpacker scramble from a comfortable trip you will actually remember.

The route (N→S, open-jaw: Hanoi in, Ho Chi Minh out)

  1. Hanoi (3 nights) — Old Quarter walk, egg coffee at Cafe Giang, day trip to Ninh Binh (Tam Coc boat, 250k VND). Sleep: apartment with kitchen, 450k VND/night.
  2. Ha Long Bay (1 night on boat) — 2D1N mid-range cruise (2.2M VND for two, includes meals, kayak, cave). Book direct with operator, not hotel desk.
