Booking.com shows 189 euro. The hotel’s own website shows 165 euro. You call the front desk, say the right words, and pay 140 euro with breakfast included. This is not luck — it is a repeatable negotiation that works because hotels have unsold inventory and commission costs they’d rather not pay. Here is the exact script.

The pre-call homework (5 minutes)

  1. Find the hotel’s direct phone (not central reservations — the property front desk). Google “[Hotel name] phone number” → verify on hotel website.
  2. Check 3 prices: OTA price (Booking/Expedia), hotel website price, “opaque” price (Priceline Express / Hotwire for same dates).
  3. Know your dates: arrival, departure, room type, number of guests.
  4. Have a “celebration” ready: anniversary, birthday, honeymoon, first trip together — any genuine occasion.

The call script (memorise this flow)

You: “Hi, I’m calling about a stay [dates] for [guests]. I see your rate on Booking is [X] euro. I’d rather book direct with you — can you match or beat that?”

If they match: “Great. Since I’m booking direct, could you include breakfast / late checkout / a room with a view? We’re celebrating [occasion].”

If they beat it: “Excellent. Same question — breakfast / late checkout / view for our [occasion]?”

If they say “that’s our best rate”: “I understand. What about a package rate — room + breakfast + parking? Or a non-refundable direct rate?”

If they say “I need manager approval”: “No problem. Can I call back in 30 minutes? What’s your name and direct line?”

The three leverage points (say these naturally)

  1. “I’m booking direct so you save the 15–25% commission.” — reminds them of their margin.
  2. “We’re celebrating [occasion].” — triggers discretionary upgrade/perk authority.
  3. “I’m flexible on room type — whatever you have available.” — lets them move inventory.

The fallback asks (if rate won’t budge)

  1. “Can you include breakfast for both of us?” (value: 25–40 euro/day)
  2. “Can we get 14:00 or 16:00 late checkout?” (costs hotel near-zero)
  3. “If a better room opens up, can we move?” (plants mid-stay upgrade seed)
  4. “Do you have a package rate — room + breakfast + parking / spa / dinner?”

What never works

  • Emailing (gets standard “best rate guaranteed” auto-reply)
  • Calling central reservations (no discretion)
  • Demanding (“I want a suite for standard price”)
  • Mentioning status you don’t have
  • Calling day-of-arrival after 14:00 (decision window closed)
  • The follow-up

    • Get confirmation number + name of person you spoke with.
    • Email the hotel: “Per our call with [Name] at [Time], confirming [Rate] + [Perks] for [Dates].”
    • Screenshot / save email.

    One-line verdict

Call the property direct, quote OTA price, ask to match/beat + breakfast/late checkout for celebration, get name + email confirmation — the 10-minute call that saves 20–40% every stay.
