Multigenerational travel is the highest-degree-of-difficulty trip planning — grandparents need pace, toddlers need naps, parents need wine, and everyone needs the bathroom at different times. Here is the framework we use for trips with three generations (ages 2–80) that return everyone happy.

The pacing rule: one anchor per half-day

No day with two “must-see” sites. One timed anchor (museum, tour, boat) in the morning OR afternoon. The other half-day is unstructured: pool, park, café, nap. The grandparents’ energy curve and the toddler’s nap window converge here — protect both.

The accommodation hierarchy

  1. Villa/apartment with separate bedrooms + shared living/kitchen. Non-negotiable. Grandparents get the ground floor; parents get the upper; toddler gets the room nearest parents. Kitchen = breakfast control = 40% food savings.
  2. Resort with villa category + kids’ club + adult pool. If villa unavailable. Kids’ club (ages 4–12) buys parents 3 hours; adult pool buys grandparents quiet.
  3. Two adjacent hotel rooms + connecting door. Last resort. Request at booking, confirm at check-in.

The “split-day” rhythm

  • 07:00–09:00: Grandparents’ walk / toddler breakfast / parents’ coffee (separate, simultaneous).
  • 09:00–13:00: Anchor activity (all together) OR split (grandparents + toddler at park/pool; parents at museum/hike).
  • 13:00–15:00: Lunch together (long, shared, the day’s anchor meal). Toddler nap starts.
  • 15:00–17:00: Grandparents rest / toddler naps / parents’ “freedom window” (swim, read, explore solo).
  • 17:00–19:00: Light activity together (gelato walk, sunset viewpoint, market).
  • 19:00+: Dinner together (early for toddler, relaxed for grandparents).

The medical / logistics kit

  • Grandparents’ medications in carry-on (split across two bags)
  • Travel insurance with evacuation covering pre-existing (buy within 14 days of deposit)
  • Portable bottle warmer / formula dispenser (toddler)
  • Stroller + wheelchair rental pre-booked (airport + destination)
  • WhatsApp group “Trip Comm” — all adults, real-time location share

The budget reality (7 nights, 6 people: 2 grandparents, 2 parents, 2 kids)

  • Villa (3BR, pool, kitchen): 2,800 euro
  • Flights (4 adults, 2 kids): 3,200 euro
  • Food (groceries + 3 dinners out): 1,100 euro
  • Activities + transport: 800 euro
  • Insurance + kit: 400 euro

Total: ~8,300 euro (1,380 pp) — the shared villa + kitchen is the single biggest lever (vs 3 hotel rooms = +2,500 euro).

One-line verdict

One anchor per half-day, villa with kitchen + separate bedrooms, split-day rhythm (grandparents rest, toddler naps, parents free), shared meals as anchors — the framework that makes three generations work.
