Boat trips to the reef cost 50–150 euro per person, take half a day, and often drop you at crowded sites. The best snorkeling is often free, from shore, at beaches where the reef kisses the sand. Here are ten beaches where you walk in, put on a mask, and see coral, fish, and sometimes turtles — no boat required.

1. Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii (USA)

Protected marine reserve, 400+ fish species. Reservation required (25 USD, book 2 days ahead). Arrive 7 a.m. for calm water. The reef starts 3 m from shore.

2. Playa Blanca, Isla Baru, Colombia

White sand, turquoise water, reef 10 m out. Stay at a beachfront eco-lodge (40 USD/night) and snorkel at dawn before day-trippers arrive from Cartagena.

3. Blue Bay Marine Park, Mauritius

Shallow lagoon, brain coral gardens, parrotfish, angelfish. Public beach, free entry. Best 9–11 a.m. before wind picks up.

4. Anse Lazio, Praslin, Seychelles

Granite boulders frame a crescent beach; the reef wraps the left side. Swim 20 m out — hawksbill turtles common. Free, no reservation.

5. Amed, Bali, Indonesia

Black sand, calm bay, USAT Liberty wreck (shore dive/snorkel, 30 m out). Stay at a beachfront homestay (15 USD/night), snorkel at sunrise.

6. Placencia, Belize

Belize Barrier Reef (UNESCO) comes within 100 m of shore at the southern end. Kayak 5 minutes from any beachfront cabin (40 USD/night) to the reef crest.

7. Akumal, Riviera Maya, Mexico

“Place of the turtles” — green turtles graze seagrass 15 m from shore. Free entry, lifeguard on duty. Arrive 8 a.m. before tour boats.

8. Siladen Island, Bunaken, Indonesia

Wall reef 5 m from beach, 70% coral cover, reef sharks, napoleon wrasse. Homestay 25 USD/night includes boat transfer from Manado.

9. Coral Bay, Ningaloo, Western Australia

Ningaloo Reef starts at the shoreline. Whale sharks (Mar–Jul), manta rays year-round. Free beach access, snorkel straight off sand.

10. Cala Goloritzé, Sardinia, Italy

Hidden cove, 40-min hike or boat. Limestone cliffs, emerald water, reef at 5 m. No facilities — bring water, snacks, reef-safe sunscreen. The hike filters the crowd.

The shore-snorkel kit (from our 12-essentials guide)

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide, apply 15 min before entry)
  • UV-protective swim shirt (UPF 50+)
  • Water shoes (urchin spines, hot sand)
  • Mask + snorkel (own fit, no rental fog)
  • Dry bag (phone, key, 20 USD bill)

One-line verdict
