Everyone knows the Caribbean is expensive at Christmas. What almost nobody knows is how precise the curve is – or that the same seven-night, all-inclusive holiday for two can cost $1,808 or $4,252 depending on which December week you pick. A 2026 weekly price survey of ten popular Caribbean all-inclusive resorts tracked every week from early December through March, and the shape of the data rewrites the usual book-early advice.
The December Price Curve, Week by Week
| Week beginning | Avg 7-night all-inclusive, 2 adults |
|---|---|
| December 5 | $1,808 |
| December 12 | $1,830 |
| December 19 | $2,767 |
| December 26 | $4,252 |
| January 2 | $2,373 |
| January-March (all weeks) | $2,180-2,270 (stable) |
The cliff between December 12 and December 19 is the whole story: rates jump about 50% the moment school breaks begin, then double again for the Christmas week itself. The most extreme single case in the survey: one Punta Cana resort quoted $1,253 for early December and $8,458 for Christmas week – nearly seven times the price for the identical room and buffet.
Early December Is the Cheapest Winter Window, Full Stop
The first two weeks of December are reliably the cheapest of the season. The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends November 30, rainfall drops, beach weather is excellent – and demand is still in holiday-preparation mode. Real examples from the survey: Occidental Punta Cana at $1,253 for seven nights ($179 a night for two) and OLEO Cancun Playa at $1,535 (under $220 a night), meals, drinks and taxes included.
There is a second dip too: rates fall sharply again in the second week of January, and January through March prices are surprisingly flat – about $2,200 a week for two, booked early. That stability is itself a finding: there is no magic cheap week in February. The only lever after New Year is booking early.
Where: Punta Cana Now, Cancun Later
- Early December: Punta Cana wins. The Dominican Republic’s resort capital has 88 all-inclusives – the largest single market in the Caribbean – and its four surveyed resorts averaged $1,745 a week in early December, well below its own January-March rates.
- January-March: Cancun wins. The six greater-Cancun resorts ran consistently cheaper than Punta Cana after the holidays, by roughly $100-350 a week for comparable properties.
- The budget alternative: Puerto Plata. The DR’s north coast quietly posts the lowest all-inclusive rates in the region – Playabachata Resort around $133 a night including meals and drinks, or the better-known Viva Heavens by Wyndham around $226.
- The trap: Jamaica for all-inclusives. Jamaica is famously cheap for independent travel but the most expensive major market for resorts – the cheapest real all-inclusive found priced around $124 per person per night. The value pattern is the opposite of its reputation.
The Fine Print That Breaks Budgets
- Dominican taxes are added at checkout. Nearly every DR resort quotes an 18% VAT plus a 10% service charge on top of the headline rate – about 30% extra. That “$101” room is really about $131.
- Holiday discounts barely exist. The Christmas-week deals that remained in the survey were still 60-80% above the same resorts’ early-December prices.
- Availability, not price, is the binding constraint. Two of the ten surveyed resorts were already sold out for individual holiday weeks in August – the cheapest room categories disappear first as December approaches.
The Bottom Line
The 2026 Caribbean playbook in one paragraph: if your dates flex, take the first two weeks of December and point at Punta Cana – it is the cheapest week-and-destination combination in the survey by a wide margin. If you are locked into the holidays, book the moment you know, because rates only move up and rooms only move out. And if January or March works, pick Cancun, book early, and ignore the myth of a secret cheap February week.
